Alab, now 1yo, was diagnosed to have 4-gene deletion alpha-thalassemia – or alpha thalassemia major. This is a condition where his body has difficulty producing alpha globin which is responsible for carrying oxygen around his body which in turn causes him to require blood transfusions every three (3) weeks for the rest of his life. Given proper medical intervention, the future holds bright for this very young survivor.

TEAM ALAB: Dad Pipo, Mom Russ with Baby Alab
” With the recently concluded Alab ng Puso Fun Run, i am still emotional and in awe with the overflowing support there was for Alab’s cause. It all started last December when Russ’ batchmates from Baguio City National Science High School batch ’99 decided to hold a get together/benefit dinner for Alab. That night, i met the most unassuming, selfless, and down to earth people. Plans for bigger fund raisers were hatched during the dinner and the rest is history.
I was initially reluctant that it would be a big success since i know first hand how difficult it is to organize these things, but these dynamic and kind hearted people proved me wrong. With the help of Ate Melan Ku-Marquez and Ms. Sandi Menchi of Team Relax Philippines, it turned out very well and exceeded all of our expectations. The total number of registrants were beyond what we ever imagined it would be. It is just so heart warming to know that there were so many runners who came even from provinces far from Baguio to give support.
This event has not only helped us financially for Alab’s upcoming bone marrow transplant but more importantly it has also helped us in raising awareness about our advocacy on Thalassemia.
Our sincerest and most heartfelt thanks to all the organizers, volunteers, family, friends, participants and supporters. This will be one of the most significant and memorable events our family, especially Alab, will proudly look back to for the rest of our lives. God bless all your kind hearts!
